The Mount of Olives associated with pivotal events in the life of Jesus, including his prayer in Gethsemane, his ascension into heaven, and prophecies of his second coming.

It is also the holiest burial ground and pilgrimage site for Judaism, with numerous sacred churches, reflecting its long history as a sacred place. 


Christian significance

  • Jesus's ministry: The Mount of Olives was a frequent location for Jesus, his disciples, and where he prayed before his betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane.


  • Ascension: It is the site from which Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection, as described in the Book of Acts.


  • Second Coming: It is central to Christian prophecy regarding Jesus's return, which is said to occur at the Mount of Olives, causing it to split in two.


  • Triumphal Entry and Olivet Discourse: Jesus rode down the mountain into Jerusalem on a donkey for his Triumphal Entry and later sat on the Mount of Olives to teach his disciples about future events - the 'Olivet Discourse'.

  • Jesus' Agony and Betrayal: These occurred on Jesus's final day in the garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the hill.
